Everything’s ready in Palamós for the 7TH edition of Beach Polo!

As is our annual tradition, this Saturday afternoon we will host an exhibition All-Star Game featuring professional water polo players Kosta Averka, Jan Perez, Oscar Asensio, Unai Biel, and Marc Valls. Additionally, we are honored to welcome three members of the Spanish national women's team, who were gold medalists at the Paris 2024 Olympics: Martina Terre, Nona Perez, and Paula Camus.

The day after, on Sunday morning, there will be 2 matches between adapted water polo teams organized by Waterpolo Ability.

In the competitive section, we will have plenty of matches (6 or 7 per team) from Friday afternoon until Sunday at 2 pm, when the grand final will take place.

Welcome to a new edition of Beach Water Polo Costa Brava! In this 7th edition of the event, we are hosting a total of 40 teams and over 425 participants from 16 different countries.

In addition to a diverse national presence, Beach Polo will once again feature significant international participation from the United Kingdom, Scotland, United Arab Emirates, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Iceland, Hungary, Canada, Denmark, Georgia, Ireland and Iran.

But as we know that everyone is eager to have a great time, there will be two venues that will keep the party going in the evenings on both Friday and Saturday, dressed up to welcome the tournament participants.

Firstly, on Friday, Es Secret Costa Brava will be hosting the dinner at their facilities. Afterwards, we will continue the party at their same establishment with several DJs sessions.

On the other hand, since we know one night is not enough, on Saturday we will celebrate a Beach Party in the same area as the village with drinks and a recognized DJ session, organized by BIWPA & El Secreto Brewing.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The 7th edition of Beach Water Polo Costa Brava Palamós kicks off on Friday, the 30th, at 3.00 pm with the first four matches.

Teams are expected to arrive at the village area one hour in advance of their first match for the collection of their 'welcome packs'.

Since check-in at the hotels cannot be done until 3.00 pm (Hotel Ona) and 4 pm (Hotel Marina), teams can leave their luggage at the hotel upon arrival and come to the beach area to collect the welcome packs and get ready for their first match.

The hotel already has lists and the number of people staying for each team.

On the map below you can see an aerial representation of how the entire competition area and the village will be distributed during the event.

Just a few meters from the water, the four competition tents will be located, one in front of each of the four playing fields. Further inside, you will find the Village Area, with bar service, music, chairs, tables, umbrellas, and the BIWPA store.

Throughout the competition, you’ll find several food trucks around the Village offering a wide range of beverages, snacks, hot tapas, and sweet treats.

These foodtrucks will be hosted by El Secreto Brewing, Coquette and Art i Sa.

Consuming drinks and/or food from other establishments in the village/bar area is strictly prohibited.

Down below you can check out the bus meeting point to for each team. The bus will be leaving from here and will be driving us to Es Secret Costa Brava (15 minutes away from the MP). Punctuality will be required in order to follow the planned schedule, so if you are not at the meeting point on time, the bus will leave without you! FRIDAY PARTY AT ES SECRET

Are the buses included? Yes, a shuttle bus service is provided for all participants to and from Es Secret. Check the schedule and meeting point above for more details!

What about dinner? Dinner is included for all participants. Please review the menu here and let us know your choice in advance.

Upon arrival at Es Secret, a designated team representative should go to the bar to confirm the order for the entire team: two starters, one main course, one dessert, and a drink per person.

FOOD & DRINKS

With the registration fee, all participants receive breakfast at the hotel on Saturday and Sunday (buffet style) and dinner on Friday night at Es Secret.

Not included:

Coquette and El Secreto will offer food and beverage service at the beach throughout all three days. Don’t miss the craft beers by El Secreto! Additionally, coffee and sweet treats will be available from ARTiSA.

WELCOME PACK

On the first day, players will receive a bag, courtesy of the Palamós City Council, containing several gifts provided by our partners and collaborators. The bag includes: a beer from El Secreto, Quely cookies, a Born Fruit snack, a Vichy drink, a BIWPA bracelet, a Rituals gift, Snack’IN snacks, a Drip by Hidden Coffe Roasters, and Kemphor toothpaste.

As soon as you arrive at the beach, please head to the village area with your entire team to pick up your welcome packs.

COMPETITION

format

The competition will take place in a single bracket, with the 40 participating teams distributed among a total of 8 groups of 5 teams each (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H).

After the group stage is completed (Saturday at 15h), all the 1st-placed teams will play a Play-Off round and will compete for positions 1-8 with three more matches (quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals):

1st of GROUP E vs 1st of GROUP F
1st of GROUP G vs 1st of GROUP H

The same logic will apply to the 2nd-placed teams (positions 9-16), 3rd-placed teams (17-24), 4th-placed teams (25-32), and 5th-placed teams (33-40). In this case, each team will play two more games.

TIEBREAKERS AND POINTS

In the group stage, 3 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. In case of a tie at the end, the following criteria will be applied: (1) Head-to-head result between the teams; (2) Overall goal difference.

An adaptation of the World Aquatics 2024 Rules will be applied. Below are some important aspects and adaptations highlighted:

All teams will play with 5 players (4 field players and one goalkeeper).
All matches will be played with ball size 4 woman.
The 2-meter and 5m zones will be marked in red and yellow. The 5m area will be also used to call the penalty fouls.
Substitutions are allowed in all moments using the exclusion area or the lateral (flying substitutions) properly.
Matches will last two parts of 10 minutes each, without stopping the clock. A 2-minute break will be used to change sides.
For matches that end in a tie and require a winner, they will be decided by a set of 3 penalty shots.
Time-outs will not be allowed.
There is no possession limit, although the referee will have the authority to call a change of possession if he considers that there is a deliberate waste of time by the team in offense.
A direct shot from outside of 5 meters will be allowed.
A shot is also allowed after being fouled outside the 5-meter area and putting the ball into play according to the rules.
Direct shot after the corner is allowed, also after putting the ball into play.
Players will be allowed to commit unlimited exclusions. Re-entry will take place immediately after visibly showing their head in the exclusion area.
The competition committee will decide the ban for players penalized with exclusions with substitution and brutality fouls.
After a goal is scored, the restart is immediate from the goalkeeper and does not require the referee's whistle. A direct shot is permitted.
The ball will only be considered out of the field if it goes beyond the inflatable boundaries, both on the goal line and the laterals.
